Introduction
gWeb
Internet Design are website builders; it's our profession and we're
good at it, but that doesn't mean we resent the website DIYers out
there. We're offering a little free advice on web design below as
an act of encouragement, as we firmly believe that they have a valid
place on the Internet and would be opposed at any attempt to over
commercialize the world wide web. Below is a page of simple dos and
don't which we feel may be helpful.
The
look of things
Facts and figures are great. They are
vitally important if the website you are building is
educational. However, if your site has nothing but
facts and figures, it may become as interesting to
watch as a soggy teabag. A few well-placed graphics and a
good eye for design may do more to capture a viewing
audience than a site full of well researched facts.
Getting them where they want to go
How many times have
you visited a web site and clicked on a link only
to find that it doesn't work? Infuriating isn't
it! Consequently, make sure your hyperlinks work. Never presume
they will - test them. Before you float your site, test and retest
your site, clicking every button, every link, etc, and making
sure it goes where you want it to go.
Have a sneaky look at the competition
Now
we certainly wouldn't encourage anyone to swipe information
from other peoples web sites (not
just because it's downright dishonest, but
also because you might end up in court - copyright is automatic within the
UK), but you should check out the websites of anyone
doing
the
same sort
of
thing
as
you. Why? Because that enables
you to see what they are doing right and, perhaps
more importantly, what they are
doing wrong. Do you really think this doesn't happen in
the business world? This is the very reason why new brands appear on the
shelves
So be inspired - but don't copy.
Spruce
it up now and then
It's
no use being complacent about your website. Sure, people may love
it, but if it doesn't change on a regular basis, why should they come
back? At gWeb we don't believe there is such a thing as a static
site. It should always be evolving, growing and changing. Not only
will it keep your viewers coming back, it will help maintain your
interest as well.
